OXFORDSHIRE County Council made nearly £60,000 from people illegally driving in bus lanes.

A freedom of information (FOI) request revealed that Oxfordshire's council in charge of roads made £59,313 from fines handed out to bad drivers between June 2017 and December 2018.

Data obtained by van hire business Northgate showed that 2,267 people were caught in the act.

Usually a CCTV camera will pick up drivers illegally using a bus lane, bus-only street or bus gate and Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) will be sent out to those who have offended.

Drivers caught are charged £90, but the fee is typically reduced by half if it is paid within 14 days.

However, out of the thousands of drivers busted on Oxfordshire's roads not all ended up paying the fine.

The FOI request also revealed how many PCNs were appealed and how many of those were successful.

In the 18 months 101 drivers contested the fines.

Out of those 60 were triumphant.

In the neighbouring council of Swindon 3,644 people were caught on the roads.

The council made £106,868.

Research last year revealed that UK councils had raked in over £35 million from bus lane fines alone.
