ANOTHER mysterious benefactor has taken it upon himself to pay for weekly takeaways for an entire village.

In March an anonymous well-wisher in Denchworth offered to pay for each of the 171 villagers to gorge on Fridays for 12 weeks and now – as his 'shift' has ended –another local has taken on the responsibility.

Over the next few weeks residents will be able to enjoy takeaways for free delivered from the local pub, The Fox in Hyde Road, until it reopens.

The 'wonderful' gesture was applauded by villagers and the pub's landlord Stephen Davidson who announced the news in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

One commenter Lucy Giles said the announcement 'brought tears to her eyes'.

She added: "This is true community spirit, may it continue once the lockdown finishes

"This is an inspiration to other villages."

Another villager Sue Galsworthy praised Mr Davidson for 'working hard to support the village through bad times despite struggling'.

During lockdown the publican opened a small shop in The Fox that sells and delivers groceries, meat, fruit and vegetables, and frozen ready-made meals cooked at its kitchen.

Mr Davidson added: "We have also started pizza deliveries around the village and have now opened that up to anyone who wants to come in and pick up.

"We have been humbled by everyone who has helped us over the last few weeks to enable us to do all these things.

"We are truly blessed to have The Fox and have made so many friends."
