LARGE stretches of pavement along busy roads will be dug up to lay a five-mile cable for electric car charging at an Oxford Park and Ride.
Plans for the new 8.5km electrical cable were approved by Oxford City Council's east area planning committee on Wednesday.
The new clutch of wires will be place in a deep, wide trench which will follow roads from a power substation south of Greater Leys to Redbridge Park and Ride.
The cable will provide power for new electric car charging points at the park and ride.
It will begin at the National Grid Cowley Substation south of Greater Leys, following Grenoble Road north before entering Oxford via Watlington Road.
Skirting around the souther bypass, the cable will then enter Oxford again at Abingdon Road where it will finish at Redbridge Park and Ride.
Councillors approved the plan unanimously, though some expressed concerns about traffic and damaging tree roots.
Planning committee chair Sian Taylor said: "This is a requirement if we are going to achieve our ambition to become carbon neutral.
"It is something that is going to have to happen if we are going to have electric charging points that are needed."
