THE tenth Oxford Half Marathon has been postponed by 12 months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Organisers Virgin Sport announced last night that the annual race will not take place on the scheduled date of Sunday, October 11.

About 10,000 runners entered in 2019, but after consulting with Oxfordshire County Council, Oxford City Council, stakeholders and partners, Virgin took the 'difficult decision' to call off this year's event.

Jessica Frey, CEO of Virgin Sport, said: "We have concluded that this is the most responsible course to ensure that we deliver a high quality, safe, sustainable and unforgettable experience for everyone.

"We know that this will come as disappointing news for many dedicated runners who were training hard in anticipation of the event taking place this October.

"However, we appreciate you will understand that the decision was taken with the health and safety of participants in mind."

All entrants have been emailed with details regarding their registration for this year's race.

Virgin have set the provisional date of Sunday, October 10 for the 2021 event.

Ms Frey added: "Your ongoing support is greatly appreciated and we look forward to racing with you next year through the beautiful streets of Oxford."
