Grassroots groups supporting young people are in with a chance of winning £1m from a housing developer.

Persimmon Homes has shortlisted Quest for Learning from Didcot, a charity that helps children learn to read, to represent the region in its Building Futures scheme.

Quest for Learning will represent the arts and education category at the national final, while Melksham Cricket Club has been selected to represent sport for the area and Wiltshire Treehouse for health.

Quest for Learning works to give every child an equal start in life by helping them to read.

One in five children cannot read well when they leave primary school and children from low-income families struggle the most.

The charity would use the funding to tackle the impact of lockdown by supporting hundreds of disadvantaged children in Oxfordshire to gain English and maths skills.

As well as the £1m first prize, there will be a £50,000 second prize and a £20,000 third prize. The remaining projects will each receive £5,000.

Voting opened on July 27, and runs until September 18.
