FOR most of us, one birthday cake will suffice. But reaching 102 deserves a sweeter treat. Pictured here is Doris, a resident at The Meadows care home in Didcot.

For her 102nd birthday she enjoyed a special celebration, surrounded by 102 cakes and gifts from her family.

Carers and residents at The Meadows care home in Didcot enjoyed Doris’ 102nd birthday party, organised by the Orders of St John Care Trust (OSJCT).

Doris was surrounded by 102 cakes made especially for her by the kitchen at the home and she opened cards as the staff sang Happy Birthday to her.

The 102-year-old was born in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, in 1918 and she was treated on her birthday with flowers and cards from her husband and two sons. She was also gifted flowers and a hamper of food from the local Waitrose store.

Head of care at OSJCT The Meadows, Debora Pinho, said: “We wish Doris a very happy birthday.

“She is a very cheerful resident and we were delighted to celebrate with her. Doris had a great big smile on her face whilst reading her cards and enjoying her party.”

Doris moved into the home late in life in spring 2018 at the age of 99.

Since moving to The Meadows in Didcot, she has regained her mobility and no longer needs a wheelchair to move around.

Doris said: “I don’t usually like to make a big fuss of myself, but I enjoy a slice of cake.”

When asked about the secret to a long life, she added: “I have always enjoyed life and I am a happy person.”
