ANOTHER 10 cases of coronavirus were confirmed in Oxford within 24 hours.

The Public Health England figures showed as of 9am, 1,126 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the city.

Oxford's cases accounted for two thirds of Oxfordshire's 15 new cases, taking the county's overall figure since the pandemic started to 3,809.

Across the UK a further 4,368 cases were recorded during the same period.

It comes as the Government’s chief scientific adviser warned the UK could see 200 or more deaths per day by mid-November if the current rate of infection is not halted.

Sir Patrick Vallance, speaking during a televised address this morning, said the 'vast majority of the population remain susceptible' to catching coronavirus and the current situation required swift action to bring the case numbers down.

He added that if current infection rates continue, the UK could see around 50,000 cases a day by the middle of October.

Sir Patrick said there was 'no doubt' the UK was seeing increasing cases of Covid-19 among all age groups.

He said it was 'not a prediction', but the current doubling of cases every seven days could lead to a dramatic rise in hospitalisations and deaths.

There are currently 1,081 people in hospital with the virus, with 138 in serious enough condition to need to be on ventilation.

In the South East, there are 86 patients and four on ventilation.

Globally, there have now been more than 31 million cases confirmed and more than 961,000 deaths.
