ANOTHER fives cases of coronavirus were confirmed in Oxford within 24 hours, with the highest UK daily rise since May also recorded.

The Public Health England (PHE) figures showed as of 9am, 1,131 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the city.

There were nine new cases across Oxfordshire, taking the total to 3,818.

The health body is now including Pillar 2 tests – those carried out by commercial partners – alongside Pillar 1 tests, which are analysed in NHS or PHE laboratories and which made up the first stage of the Government’s mass testing programme.

Cumulative case counts include patients who are currently unwell, have recovered and those that have died.

Across the UK another 4,926 coronavirus cases were confirmed.

This is the highest daily rise since May 7, though testing is much more extensive.

A further 28 people, who tested positive for coronavirus, were announced to have died in England’s hospitals.

It brings the total number of confirmed reported deaths there to 29,785.

Patients were aged between 56 and 92 years old. All but two patients had known underlying health conditions.

The NHS England update said people’s date of death ranged from March 31to September 21, with the majority on or after September 18.

Globally, there have now been more than 31 million cases confirmed and more than 965,000 deaths.

This highest death toll remains the US, which is approaching 200,000 since the pandemic started.
