THOUGHTFUL carers have put out a plea for members of the community to send in birthday cards for a resident’s 100th birthday next month.

Trudi Walker, who lives in Nicholson House in Abingdon, is turning 100 on Thursday, November 12.

As her family cannot have a party to celebrate this momentous occasion, they appealed to the public to get as many people as possible to send her a card.

In a heartfelt post on the Abingdon community page on Facebook, care home worker Helen Dyer wrote on Sunday: “As we all know, the effects on people’s mental health during the pandemic has been as much of a problem as their physical health.

“Elderly folk who live in care homes have not had the normal contact with their loved ones, and for those with dementia this has been especially difficult.

“Just think about it – she was born just two years after the end of World War I.”

Since last week Ms Walker has already received more than 45 cards, according to carer Belinda Hutchinson.

Staff at the home on Turner Road hope to present her with the cards to celebrate the extra special occasion.

They advised that Ms Walker loves sentimental cards with poems.

Ms Walker’s family will open the cards and read them to her to ensure that she will be kept safe from any potential Covid-19 infections lurking in the envelope.

One Facebook user Cathy Dier said that she had already written two birthday limericks for Mrs Walker.

Anyone who would like to send Ms Walker their birthday wishes can post them addressed to Trudi Walker, c/o The Office, Nicholson house, Abingdon, OX14 5TT.
