NEW parking measures have signalled an end to weeks of chaos in an East Oxford street.

Oxfordshire County Council has painted double yellow lines along Rymers Lane in Florence Park after drivers left their cars on the route following the introduction of a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) in nearby Cricket Road.

It was particularly problematic during peak times, when photos showed up to four vehicles side-by-side.

Following reported incidents of road rage and concerns over the safety of families and children, county councillor for Cowley John Sanders called for the double yellows "as an emergency".

He praised the council for carrying out the work "quickly and without a fuss", but felt a CPZ in Rymers Lane was overdue.

Mr Sanders said: "It's more key they introduce a CPZ, as that will give it the same clout."

The councillor previously suggested a school street scheme – where roads around schools are temporarily closed at drop-off and pick-up times – as a long-term option for Rymers Lane.

Oxford Mail:

Only cars displaying a relevant permit can park in a CPZ, where the kerbside space is split into designated bays and double yellows.

Rymers Lane is expected to fall within the proposed Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) for Cowley, with bollards or street furniture used to block traffic and prevent rat-running.

It is set to cost £50,000 and cover Florence Park, Church Cowley and Temple Cowley, with a county council spokesperson confirming last week that engineers are still "preparing the drawings for consultation".

He added: "Council officers will soon agree on the timeline for implementation later this year.”

Mr Sanders said: "We aren't trying to stop people from owning a car and driving.

"But it's a shame we can't implement controlled parking across the whole of Oxford in one go."
