A PAEDOPHILE caught with images of child sex abuse after flouting a court ban has been jailed - but will not spend any more time behind bars.

While out on licence after his early release from a 12-year jail sentence Michael Penfold was found to have breached the conditions of that sentence during an inspection.

After raiding his home it was revealed that he had downloaded hundreds of indecent images of children before he was caught.

The 54-year-old of Stonesfield, Didcot admitted three counts of breaching a sexual harm prevention order and three counts of making indecent images.

He was sentenced for those crimes at Oxford Crown Court today.

Outlining the case prosecutor Paul Fairley said that a decade ago Penfold was convicted and jailed at the same court for 12 years for sexual offences.

He was released on licence in 2016 and was banned from having electronic devices capable of using the internet without notifying the authorities and having specially designed monitoring software installed.

He was also subjected to unannounced visits and routine checks by officers.

On June 29 this year officers went to his home and he was found to have a mobile phone which was seen to have dozens of indecent images of children on it.

A further search of the address revealed two other mobile phones and a tablet.

On analysing the devices hundreds of indecent images were found, made up of 288 in the most severe category - A, 255 in category B and 357 in category C.

In mitigation it was said that Penfold had been recalled in relation to his original sentence and would serve that sentence until May 2022.

Sentencing, Recorder David Brock said: "These offences are so serious that only an immediate custodial sentence is appropriate."

He was jailed for a total of 16 months, made up for eight months for the breaches and an additional eight months for the banned images.

He must also pay a statutory victim surcharge and the existing sexual harm prevention order will run indefinitely. Penfold will also sign the sex offender's register indefinitely.

As that jail term began today it will not exceed his expected release in 2022.
