BUILDING work on an Oxford school's new £2 million boathouse is expected to start next summer.

Headington School is erecting the two-storey boathouse on the Thames at Long Wittenham near Didcot.

The project includes a wet dock and landing stages, and it is hoped that villagers will also be able to use the facilities.

Building work had to be suspended during the pandemic, in order to clear outstanding planning permissions from South Oxfordshire District Council.

Now it is set to resume in the coming months.

School bursar Richard Couzens said: “It will probably take around six months to complete all the planning conditions and then it is down to the school governors to decide when to start construction.

"We hope it will be in mid-2021 but much depends on the Covid-19 position, weather conditions and construction costs."
