More than 300 new homes will be coming to South Oxfordshire with two new developments in Wallingford and Watlington confirmed; however, some feel these houses are not needed.

Housing developer Bloor Homes has said the housing estates will “bring much-needed housing to the area”. Wallingford Reach will include 150 new homes and Redkite View in Watlington will include 183 new homes, with one, two, three and four-bedroom properties suitable for a variety of buyers and both developments will also include affordable housing. Wallingford Reach is set to launch on February6, 2021 and Redkite View is launching in the Summer.

Jack Costello from Bloor Homes said: “The homes will be suitable for first-time buyers, families who are looking to step up the property ladder to larger home and downsizers.”

Redkite view in Watlington will provide 183 new homes to the area in addition to developer, Providence Land Limited, planning to build 70 homes on land off Cuxham Road and 60 west of Pyrton Lane.

Not everyone believes these new homes are “much-needed”, Councillor Sue Roberts believes it is contributing to over-development in South Oxfordshire. She said: “Theses houses are not needed we have built enough houses in South Oxfordshire for our people.”

Referring to the local plan she explained that according to population statistics for every four houses that are built only one can be filled. She added: “Once you have concreted over the land you can’t restore nature, you can’t grow local food, all you have is concrete.”

As part of the developments, Bloor Homes aims to provide funding towards local services. Contributions for Wallingford Reach will include: £1,630,300 for community infrastructure, £150,000 for bus services, £31,110 for recycling and £15,000 for improvement of crossing facilities. Contributions for Redkite View will also include: £1,355,851 for community infrastructure, £1,354,200 on the Watlington Edge Road Scheme, £31,110 on recycling and £61,400 on public art.
