AN ESTABLISHED village pub in South Oxfordshire with bags of potential has been put up for sale for more than half a million pounds.

The Shepherd's Crook in Crowell near Chinnor was well known by the small community for its spacious garden and picturesque views as it is nestled right by The Ridgeway – Britain's oldest road and now a popular route for cyclists.

Even more, the pub also sits beside Crowell’s village church, which itself dates back to the 12th Century.

However, the Shepherd's Crook is now in need of a new owner and has been placed on the market for £525,000, with the sale advertised both on Fleurets and Rightmove.

Describing the pub, Rightmove, states: "The Shepherds Crook is a detached public house on ground and first floor.

"After purchase our client carried out an extensive refurbishment to both the trading and private areas.

"At ground floor there is an open plan bar with character features and access to outside trading space.

"The private accommodation is of a high standard with a fully fitted kitchen."

Regulars at the Shepherd's Crook will undoubtedly be hoping that whoever takes on the beloved boozer will keep a few of its key features in place.

It is one of the only pubs in the area and often received high praise from visitors who stop for a pint or some lunch.

David Richardson, spokesperson for Oxford CAMRA, said its would be 'encouraging' if the pub does not end up in the hands of a chain.

He commented: "This sounds like a good opportunity to take on a modernised but traditional pub.

"Having outside space is also a big plus in the very uncertain trading conditions of 2021.

"It would be very encouraging to see it remain as a free house not tied to any beer supplier, as there is a now a huge range of local breweries to choose from and people want to drink as well as eat local."

A number of pubs have been hit hard by the Covid-19 crisis, forcing them to close with many expected not to reopen their doors in April.

However, a new Government scheme announced earlier this month as part of Rishi Sunak's Budget could be the saving grace for this community pub.

The Community Ownership Fund means that the Government will match money raised by community groups up to £250,000 to help them buy or take over a venue to keep it running.

For a number of years community-owned pubs have been succeeding in Oxfordshire, particularly in villages.
