When the Clap for Carers movement began last year, it gave those who took part a sense of pride, togetherness and a passion for noise pollution.

But it wasn’t long before murmurs rippled through communities that the clapping, although nice, wasn’t enough to pay the bills of hard working carers.

This week is Carers Week, and there are renewed calls to give more recognition - of a financial variety - to those who not only need it, but deserve it.

Whether it be those employed by the NHS, within private companies or those looking after their own loved ones in an unpaid capacity, carers need more support.

Among those joining calls to award our carers more cash are Layla Moran MP.

It's estimated that there are over 10,348 unpaid carers in Oxford West and Abingdon alone, who look after elderly, disabled or vulnerable people.

Now the cacophony of clapping has stopped, let's look for some serious solutions and adequate recompense.

It is difficult to think about before it happens, but if and when you need a carer, do you want them to feel happy and content in their role, or overworked, tired and unappreciated?
