Fire crews were called out to reports of a woman in distress in the river Thames by Abingdon lock this morning.

Red Watch from Abingdon Fire Station, along with their On Call crew, attended the incident at 11am.

Along with colleagues from Thames Valley Police and South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust and additional resources from Rewley Road and Kidlington Fire Stations, crews were able to quickly locate the woman, and the specialist boat crew from Kidlington were able to pull her out of the river.

She was then transported to an awaiting ambulance by Abingdon Lock for further medical assistance.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "This morning's incident again highlights the dangers of open water, and especially rivers, where fast currents and hidden objects under the water can overcome even the strongest of swimmers.

"Anyone witnessing someone in trouble in the water should dial 999 and shout for help. Never enter the water yourself to attempt a rescue, and keep a look out for any nearby lifebuoys or floating lines along the water's edge that may be of assistance."

People are advised to respect the water, even if you are a good swimmer and familiar with the area and to be water aware.

This comes after fire crews rescued a struggling swimmer from the Thames near Nags Head Island in Abingdon over the weekend.
