Sports fans are being encouraged to try the new facilities at a revamped leisure centre.

Willowbrook Leisure Centre, in the Ladygrove area of Didcot, has been given a facelift. Now its owners, Didcot Town Council is organising a series of open evenings to show off the activities on offer.

Activities include taekwondo, badminton, basketball and aerobics.

The centre reopened in October after being closed since December 2020.

The town council has taken over the management of the centre from Soll Leisure Group.

The centre is open two evenings per week – Wednesday and Thursday.

Nick White, the town council's property and facilities manager said the aim was to expand its opening times and is attempting to recruit new staff.

He said: “We want to get the public back in to have a look at what’s been done and to talk to us about potential future use of the spaces. This way, the public can see where the council has spent money to bring the building back up to standards.”

“We are currently working on recruiting new staff so that we can be open more evenings during the week."

Mocky Khan, the Mayor of Didcot, invited people to visit the centre.

He said: “The open days at Willowbrook will showcase and remind Didcot that the centre is open and available for use and hire. When Willowbrook was closed due to the pandemic and the previous leisure provider was unable to reopen or continue, there were a lot of calls from local groups and residents to reopen Willowbrook as soon as possible.

“The council went through a process of trying to find an alternative provider and tenant. We understood that this will take time so the council decided to reopen and manage the centre in the meantime so we have a leisure facility to use now."

Mr Khan added: “It would be great if previous users of the hall, other groups and residents, would use this great asset and facility and see the renovation work that has been completed on Willowbrook."

He is inviting people to an open evening tomorrow from 3-9pm.
