Thames Water is hosting community drop in sessions following its proposal for a huge reservoir near Abingdon.

The Abingdon reservoir, would cover farmland between Steventon, East Hanney and Drayton.

The reservoir is being suggested as one of several options to meet future water shortfalls across the region, which are predicted to be as much as 1.1 billion litres a day by 2040. Other options include the transfer of water from other parts of the country, transfers of water between water companies in the south east and more recycling of wastewater, with a combination of options expected to be needed.

Nevil Muncaster, strategic resources director at Thames Water, said: “We’re looking forward to meeting people at the events and hearing their individual views and ideas. We recognise current concerns about the reservoir proposal and the open sessions will provide the wider community with an opportunity to come and talk to us directly in an informal setting.

"The need for action to make sure our taps don’t run dry in the next 20 years is widely recognised, but understandably there are lots of different thoughts on how we meet this challenge, with the reservoir being just one option."

The sessions will be on Wednesday, March 2, 1.30-5.30pm at Steventon Village Hall and 6.15-8.00pm at St Michael’s C of E Primary School.
