A lorry driver is in a critical condition after three lorries collided with a tailback from an earlier crash involving two cars.

Police said a BMW 3 Series and a Toyota Yaris crashed on the A34 southbound carriageway between Abingdon and Didcot at around 12.36am this morning.

Both drivers, men in their 30s and 40s, were taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in a stable condition with minor injuries.

At around 1.05am, two Volvo HGVs and a DAF Trucks HGV then collided with the tailback from the earlier collision.

Two drivers were taken to hospital where one is critically ill, the other is stable, police confirmed.

A spokesperson said: “Two of the drivers were taken to the same hospital; a man in his 40s in a critical condition with life-threatening injuries and a man in his 50s in a stable condition with minor injuries – the third driver was uninjured."

The A34 northbound is now fully open between Didcot and Abingdon.

One lane on the southbound carriageway has opened but will close again from 10pm for resurfacing work.

Anyone with information about either collision should call 101, quoting reference numbers 43220196363 for the two-car collision and 43220196425 for the HGV collision.
