GEORGE Baldock has been called up to the Greece squad for the first time.

The Sheffield United right back has had two loan spells at Oxford United, establishing himself as a popular player on and off the pitch.

The 29-year-old initially joined on loan from MK Dons in February 2015, starting a dozen games and scoring once.

He then returned to the U’s on a season-long loan the following campaign but was recalled by MK in January 2016 – with Karl Robinson boss at the Buckinghamshire side at the time.

United had tried to sign Baldock, but the then Sky Bet Championship club were not interested in letting him go.

Baldock, who has joined up with Gus Poyet’s Greece squad for UEFA Nations League games against Northern Ireland, Kosovo and Cyprus, said: “It is a real honour to represent Greece through my late grandmother, this is a proud moment, not just for me, but for my entire family.

“It has been a possibility for a while, so I’m happy now to be in a position where I am available to play. It is an exciting time ahead.”

Baldock could come up against last season’s U’s loanees Gavin Whyte and Ciaron Brown, who were named in the Northern Ireland squad earlier today.

Last week, Baldock’s brother Sam signed a two-year contract with United, after his short-term deal with the club expired at the end of the season.

The striker initially signed as a free agent in February, after leaving Derby County.

He suffered a knee injury less than a month after his U’s debut, however made a big impression at the club, scoring four goals in seven games.

A third Baldock sibling, James, is the club doctor.
