Queen Victoria statue in Abingdon wearing a sunhat

The sun hat, which is a light pink bucket-style hat, was spotted on the statue erected in Abbey Gardens, Abingdon by a resident yesterday (19).

It comes as temperatures reach highs of 37°C across the county in a two-day heatwave this week.

The statue is about 15 feet high with the pedestal of Portland stone being seven feet high and the statue, made of Sycilian marble, being about eight feet high.

It was erected in 1887 to celebrate the Golden Jubilee on June 20. It was presented by Edwin Trendell and unveiled in the town by Lord Wantage.

On the statue’s head is a small crown with a veil – which has now been covered with the sun hat.
