AN artist who appeared on Channel 4 show The Big Naked Painting Challenge has created paper lampshades with designs of Oxford City Centre.

Rosalind Freeborn, founder of London-based company Papershades, creates lampshades depicting towns and cities across the UK on paper that can fit on the average lamp stand.

She has recently produced a lampshade of Oxford City Centre as well as Henley.

The paper collage artist said she wanted to find a “new kind of canvas” for her art and noticed the lampshades in her home were “dull”.

She said: “Why can’t they be made from paper and based on my designs?’  I asked myself. It took a while to work out how to turn flat paper into a workable lampshade but I did it and Papershades was launched about five years ago.

“I have several ranges on my website but one of the most popular is my depiction of places in the UK - counties, cities and towns.”

The artist was born and raised in Oxford and her lampshade was inspired by the “fabulous view of the city’s dreaming spires” from her childhood window.

She said: “My father was a don at Brasenose College. We lived on Harcourt Hill and I went to North Hinksey and Botley primary schools.”

The artist also recently appeared on Channel4’s Drawers Off: The Big Naked Painting Challenge in June.
