A Walcot woman has admitted perverting the course of justice after she falsely accused someone of rape.

Sophie Leanne James made a false accusation of rape in August 2019, and “named an innocent perpetrator”, Swindon Crown Court heard on Friday (August 12).

The 25-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of doing an act with intent to pervert the course of public justice.

But she was not sentenced on Friday after her barrister requested time for reports to be prepared.

Clare Gooding said she was intending to request a psychological report and a pre-sentence report.

Judge James Townsend said it was “obviously a strange case putting it in simple terms”.

Adjourning the sentence, he told James, of Frobisher Drive: “You’ve admitted making a false complaint, but I’m not going to sentence you today, because we need to know more about you.

“You will be seen by a doctor and someone from the probation service, and then come back before this court on November 4 when me or another judge will decide what needs to be done.”

James was released on unconditional bail, pending the sentencing hearing on November 4 at the same court.
