A McDonald's restaurant has been handed the highest hygiene rating possible by the Food Standards Agency.

The fast-food outlet in Benson was given a five-out-of-five rating after an assessment by the non-ministerial government department on May 18.

The score means that hygiene standards at the restaurant – which is located off Oxford Road near the Elm Bridge roundabout – are ‘very good’.

This includes the handling of food, how food is stored and prepared, and the cleanliness of facilities.

Just a few miles away, the Lord Nelson Inn at Brightwell Baldwin, a village near Watlington, was also given a score of five on May 4.

It means that of South Oxfordshire's 275 restaurants, cafes and canteens with ratings, 139 (51 per cent) have ratings of five and none have zero ratings.
