Abbey Woods Academy opens pop up bookshop with charity help

Abbey Woods Academy, a member of the Anthem Schools Trust, received a delivery of nine reading boxes containing books suitable for pupils from nursery to year six.

Pupils were invited to select a book entirely free of charge.

The Children’s Book Project is a charity working to distribute new and lightly used books to children throughout the UK.

In addition to the books, Abbey Woods also received a kit enabling them to set up their own pop up bookshop.

Findings by the National Literacy Trust in 2023 discovered that only two in five children aged eight to 18 found pleasure in reading, while fewer than three in 10 maintained a daily reading routine.

The academy also invites parents of nursery and reception children to participate in a specific phonics workshop.

Abbey Woods pupils are also participating in the ‘Spellbound Schools’ partnership with The Story Museum in Oxford, targeting to foster a love for reading and storytelling.

Headteacher of Abbey Woods Academy, Sophie Charter said: "Everyone at Abbey Woods wants to say a big thank you to the Children’s Book Project for helping to make our pop up book project such a success.

"Reading is the very basis for success in primary school, and throughout life, and having access to books is vital for all children if we are to engender a lifelong love of books.”
