A secondary school will remain closed tomorrow due to flooding while ability to teach pupils from home is being affected.

Larkmead School in Abingdon has announced it will stay closed tomorrow (January 9) after not opening today (January 8) following the flooding from Storm Henk.

The school has no electricity, heating or hot water.

The loss of electricity is impacting around 30 classrooms as well as toilets, offices, learning support, a common room, gym, hall and canteen at the site.

It also means that teachers are not able to access resources and materials to support remote learning.

The school has apologised for the impact of this and said their next steps will be guided by their insurance team.

A statement said: "The loss of electricity means that there is no IT, internet access or phones at Larkmead.

"This means that teachers are not able to access resources, visualisers and other materials that will support our usual remote learning approaches. We are sorry for the impact this may have.

"This means that, unfortunately, we are not able to reset student passwords at the moment. We are also not receiving any phone calls.

"Our next steps will be guided by the insurance adjuster team. We will aim to update parents and students as soon as we are able."

One of the school's boiler houses has been flooded during Storm Henk causing the loss of heating and hot water.

The school added further disruption is expected.

A statement said: "As well as the known loss of heating and hot water caused by flooding in one of our boiler houses, we have now lost electricity in that area, impacting around 30 classrooms as well as toilets, offices, learning support, common room, gym, hall and canteen.

"We have also lost some electricity supply to other areas of the school.

"The site team are working hard to address the situation with the support of the Vale Academy Trust.

"We will aim to switch to remote learning on Monday, but this may be impacted by teachers’ access to technology and materials.

"Loss of electricity across much of the school will have an impact.

"Flooding has prevented catering deliveries, but we have been able to send vouchers to families in receipt of free school meals to cover Monday.

"The catering company has asked us to advise parents of children not in receipt of free school meals to please provide packed lunches while the situation with the canteen is addressed.

"We thank you for your patience and support as we assess what is becoming a more complicated situation and what will be possible for Tuesday onwards."
