A serial shoplifter stole more than £3,000 worth of champagne from a Wiltshire supermarket.

Nicholas Gadd, of Bradley Road in Trowbridge, admitted to stealing at least 28 bottles of the drink.

The 48-year-old appeared before magistrates for sentencing earlier this month.

The defendant’s spree began on January 15, 2023, when he shoplifted 12 bottles of champagne worth £676 from the Bradford on Avon Sainsbury's and went back the next day to steal eight more bottles worth £421.

Months later, he took £575 worth of alcohol from the store on October 29 and 30, 2023, then stole three bottles of champagne worth £90 on February 21, 2024, before grabbing two more bottles worth £60 on February 27 and three bottles worth £103 on February 29.

He also pleaded guilty to stealing steaks, a pruning saw, two batteries, and a battery charger worth £185.88 from the Westbury Lidl on June 24, 2023, taking meat from the same supermarket on April 3, 2024, and stealing meat and cheese on April 22.

Gadd admitted to failing without reasonable cause to surrender to custody at Salisbury Magistrates' Court on January 25, 2024, having been released on bail on December 4, 2023.

He must carry out six months of drug rehabilitation, up to 15 rehabilitation activity days, and 160 hours of unpaid work in the next 12 months, as well as pay £85 in court costs.
