A man who allegedly attempted to steal goods worth over £1,700 from Tesco was stopped by police.

The incident occurred last week when officers were out on patrols around Abingdon including retail parks and shopping centres.

Officers stopped a man who was allegedly attempting to steal items from the Tesco Extra on Marcham Road.

The goods were worth over £1,700 and the incident was then followed up by attempted shoplifting in Abingdon’s Poundland.

Thames Valley Police took to social media to share the news along with other incidents that were dealt with including damage to play equipment in Marcham Park.

A spokesperson for TVP South Oxfordshire and Vale said: “PCSOs Wright, Islam, & Crowther & PCs Musat & Roberts from the Abingdon Neighbourhood Team had a busy set of shifts last week. 

“Completed patrols in the town centre, Fairacres & Seacourt Retail Parks and Westway Shopping centre, Botley.  

“Prevented a man from stealing over £1700 worth of goods from Tesco and later that day deterring a man from shoplifting from Poundland.

“Responded to a report of further damage to play equipment in Marcham park.

“Regular patrols are continuing to reassure the residents & investigations ongoing.”

The same officers also seized a golf club and baseball bat from a gang as well as detained a man after he allegedly hit an off-duty police officer.
