PEOPLE from across Oxfordshire will pay their respects to Britain’s war dead at services across the county this weekend.

People in towns and villages will mark the signing of the Armistice on November 11, 1918, by parading through the streets, laying wreaths and attending services.

They will remember fallen heroes from the two world wars and other more recent conflicts, including those in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The following services will take place in the Vale of White Horse and South Oxfordshire areas: l Abingdon: The service takes place in St Helen’s Church at 10am, after which the parade will march to the War Memorial in Ock Street, arriving at 10.50am.

l Blewbury: Wreath-laying at St Michael’s Church and service at 11am. The congregation then walks to the memorial stone to lay further wreaths.

l Didcot: At 2.45pm, the parade will form in Edinburgh Drive car park, before moving off at 3pm for the War Memorial at the sundial, Civic Hall, Britwell Road.

l Ardington and Lockinge: At 10.20am the parade forms at Ardington Church to proceed to the Ardington Memorial for a short service.

Immediately afterwards, the group proceeds by car to Lockinge where a service is held at the memorial prior to a service in the church.

A service will take place at the War Memorial. After the service, the parade will march back to the starting point.

l Faringdon: The parade will form at the Corn Exchange at 9.15am, ready to march off at 9.30am via the Market Place to All Saints’ Church. After the service the parade will re-form to move to the war memorial.

l The Hanneys: At 10.15am, the parade will form at Hanney RBL 66 Club, East Hanney. At 10.25am, it will proceed to the Parish Church in West Hanney, where the war memorial is situated, to arrive in time for a church service at 11am. After the service the parade will return to the club.

l Harwell: The parade starts at 10.30am, and moves off at 10.40am to the war memorial in the High Street and then on to St Matthew’s Church for a service. After the service the parade will attend a short ceremony at the war graves in the nearby cemetery.

l The Challows: The parade will form at 10.30am at The Avenue, Childrey, ready to move off at 10.40am to the war memorial and after to St Mary’s Church for a service.

l Wallingford: The parade forms at 10.30am in the Cattle Market car park. It moves off at 10.45am via New Road, St Leonard’s Square and St Martin’s Street to the war memorial in Market Place. At 10.50am, there is a short service followed by the laying of wreaths. The parade then moves into St Mary’s Church for a church service.

l Wantage: At 10.40am, the parade will form in the Civic Hall car park. At 10.45am, it will move off east on Portway, north on Newbury Street and west on Church Street to the parish church where the war memorial is situated. Following the church service the parade will re-form and move back via Market Place. Two wreath-laying ceremonies in Wantage area: 9am at Charlton Parish Church and 9.30am at Grove airfield.

l Wootton: The parade forms at 10.30am around the war memorial outside St Peter’s Church. Following the laying of wreaths a service is held.

l In Oxford, there are two main services — at the war memorial in St Giles, and at the Commonwealth War Graves Section in Botley.

The Very Rev Bob Wilkes, the vicar at St Michael at the Northgate church in Cornmarket Street, will lead the service in St Giles, which starts at 10.45am.

Jim Lewendon, the Royal British Legion’s county vice-chairman, said: “We would like to see as many members of public as possible at Remembrance Day ceremonies throughout the county.

“Remembrance Day is an opportunity to remember the fallen in the two world wars and more recent conflicts including Iraq and Afghanistan.

“People have been very generous this year buying poppies and we would love to see them on Sunday.”
