A GRANDFATHER and his son are to paraglide over the Himalayas for the Help for Heroes charity.

Ron Mutton, 66, of Boars Hill, and his son Adrian, 35, will be making the flight next week.

Mr Mutton, who runs a plumbing and heating firm, said he had got the idea when reading The Daily Telegraph.

He said: “I saw pictures of some guys paragliding over the mountains and just thought it looked fantastic.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime trip and we are really excited.”

Mr Mutton flew to India, where his son and two grandchildren live, this week. The duo are due to embark on their three-day expedition on Thursday.

Their trip will take them over the mountains from India to Daramasala, at an altitude of 5,000ft for two to three hours at a time.

Mr Mutton said: “It’s some of the world’s wildest terrain, and we’ll be flying with eagles and griffin vultures.

“Hopefully, we’ll be able to spot remote shepherd’s camps, villages and temples dotted around the mountains.”

It’s not the first time the two have been involved in something daring.

He said: “We have both done parachute jumps for charity before.

“And, when I was skiing last year, the queue for the ski lift was too long, so I just hitched a lift with a paraglider and we flew down the mountain.”

Mr Mutton’s son, who has lived in India for the past three years, also takes part in heli-skiing — jumping out of a helicopter and skiing down a mountain.

On one recent visit to the region, the pair just missed out on a meeting with the Dalai Lama. Mr Mutton said: “My son and I were trekking in the Himalayas and we were granted a meeting with the Dalai Lama. But, unfortunately, we were a few minutes late because we had to get some medicine, and we were told we’d missed him.”

The pair aim to raise as much money as possible from their adventure— and have already collected around £300.

Mr Mutton said: “We have no limits on how much we are planning to raise — we just want as much as possible. When we raised money for the tsunami, we managed to pay for a whole house and furniture for a family out there, so we’d like to do as well this time.”
