KEEN swimmers had the chance of taking a dip outdoors when the Abbey Meadow pool in Abingdon opened for the summer season on Saturday.

It might not have been a glorious Bank Holiday weekend but that did not deter people and, pictured from left to right, James Marsh, of the Friends of Abbey Meadow Outdoor Pool group, Heather Brown, of the Choose Abingdon Partnership, and former town councillor Alastair Fear were among the first to give it a go.

The open-air pool in Abbey Close was closed in 2005 after a round of Vale of White Horse District Council budget cuts. But a public campaign, backed by Abingdon Town Council and the Herald, helped it reopen the following year.

Impressed by the groundswell of public opinion, Abingdon Town Council increased its annual grant from £14,000 to £35,000, and the Vale council provided £70,000 to improve facilities.
