FANS of folk legend Bob Dylan have the chance to appreciate a female take on his songs when singer Barb Jungr, left, performs in Didcot.

Jungr is visiting the town’s Cornerstone arts centre on Friday, July 1, as part of a nationwide tour to launch her new album, Man In The Long Black Coat, celebrating Dylan’s 70th birthday last month.

Her new recording featuring several new tracks — Sara, Man In The Long Black Coat, It Ain’t Me Babe, and With God On Our Side — marks a culmination of a decade-long fascination with Dylan’s music, as Jungr admitted: “Once I had started singing Dylan’s songs, I couldn’t stop.”

Jungr’s unique interpretations of some of Dylan’s most popular songs draw on the wide range of influences during her varied and extensive career, from cabaret to European jazz. Man In The Long Black Coat offers an insight into one artist’s obsession and exploration of another’s works. Her imaginative reworkings, which give a female’s perspective on a traditionally male body of work, not only reveal her passion for Dylan’s songs, but also her great skill as an interpreter and a singer.

Born and raised in the north west of England, Jungr, also a respected writer and lyricist, is now based in London. She worked with comedians and performers on the emerging alternative cabaret circuit in the UK before creating the themed shows which became her trademark and brought her to the attention of Linn Records, with which she released six records before releasing The Men I Love on the Naim label.

She teamed up again with the Gramophone Label of the Year, Linn Records, in 2011 for the release of Man In The Long Black Coat.

Tickets for Jungr’s Didcot concert, which starts at 8pm, are priced at £14, £12.50 concessions, and £11.50 for centre members and are available from the Cornerstone box office in person, on 01235 515144 or via the centre’s website at wwww.cornerstone-arts.org
