VETERANS, well wishers, soldiers and families turned out to pay tribute to servicemen and women on Armed Forces Day last Saturday.

In Wallingford, a flypast by Merlin and Puma helicopters from RAF Benson capped a ceremony unveiling a new plaque on the town hall marking the award of the freedom of the town to The Rifles.

The honorary colonel of the regiment, Brigadier Nigel Mogg, said: “Armed Forces Day is very important. It brings to the attention of the public what the armed forces are doing today on operations in Afghanistan and other countries.”

The mayor of Wallingford, Colin Dolton, said: “The connection in Walilngford with RAF Benson and The Rifles is very strong. People turn out every Remembrance Day and show support for the forces whatever they are doing.

“While Remembrance Day is about remembering the fallen, today we are recognising the work the armed forces are doing today, and showing public support.”

Children were able to clamber around a Puma helicopter on the Kinecroft.

Wantage ACF cadet Ryan Haynes, 14, said: “It is a good day to get everyone together, and it gives us a chance to speak to experienced soldiers.

“We can meet up and enjoy doing what we do best.”

Flight Lieutenant Alan Ross, from 230 Squadron at RAF Benson, said: “It is always nice to interact with the public to make them more aware of our armed forces, and it is exciting for them to see something they would only ever see on a video game.”
