A NURSERY at an RAF base has been advised to improve after Ofsted found fault with 'variable' teaching.

Spring nursery at RAF Benson, near Wallingford, has been rated 'requires improvement' by the childcare regulator.

A report, published following a visit last month, said: "Children do not make the best possible progress due to variations in the quality of teaching and planning.

"Some activities do not successfully capture children's attention or sustain concentration, so they quickly wander off.

"Weaknesses in teaching and planning have an impact on children's attitudes and motivation to learn."

The nursery had 76 children on roll when Ofsted visited, which was its first inspection since registering in 2016.

Ofsted was complimentary elsewhere in the report, noting that safeguarding was 'effective' and 'staff build friendly relationships with children'.

It added: "When teaching is good, children are motivated and eager to learn.

"Leaders act positively on the views of parents and others to make improvements that benefit the children."
