Every little thing that we do for the environment makes some kind of difference.

For example, if everyone turned off an unneeded light, that would make a difference: it could save thousands of tonnes of CO2. It would be a start.

In the same way, if everyone switched off their engines at a red light, that would make a difference.

Did you know that if the car in front of you is idling, you are breathing in all those noxious fumes trapped inside your car more than are nearby pedestrians? Idling outside school? Really?

Walk with the kids to school or cycle: it’s free, you get fresh air and exercise as well as creating less pollution.

Other ways to make a difference are to not use the little plastic bags in the supermarket for your fruit and veg.

If everyone did that, it would make a difference: fruit and veg live quite happily loose in shopping bags.

If everyone who travels from Wallingford to work in Oxford or Reading used the bus one week a month, that would make a difference.

Ten-trip tickets currently cost £28.80 to Oxford or Reading.

Have you worked out how much it really costs in the car?

Small cars cost approximately £50 a week including road tax, insurance, MOT etc.

It’s so relaxing sitting on the bus reading the paper, letting another driver take the strain.

How about joining a salad club with workmates to have a nutritious meal every day with little cost and your turn only, say, once a fortnight?

Does that T-shirt really need ironing? Or that sheet? Will anyone notice if you don’t iron your underwear?

All these actions add up and make a difference.

If everyone had a lovely veggie curry or a risotto twice a week instead of always having meat for dinner, that would make a difference: it would save hard-earned cash and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from farm animals.

Other easy ways to make a difference: use an extension lead with an indicator light and plug your TV, DVD player, etc into it, then you can switch off everything in one go. Saves electricity and money. Do this in all rooms at home.

Having made a start, let it become a habit, then add another change till it, too, becomes a habit.

Then keep going till you are truly living a sustainable lifestyle.
