Do you remember this campaign which Sustainable Wallingford carried out with your help way back in 2009?

At that time, some of our volunteers traipsed round all the homes and shops then in town, asking everyone to take part and commit to the eight challenges picked at a meeting of community organisations.

When we went back a few weeks later to count the cards displayed, we were mightily impressed with everyone’s commitment to do their bit.

In case you have forgotten or did not take part at that time, it’s not too late. Here are the challenges:

The Eight Greening Challenges (with annual savings in pounds and CO2):

1. Turn off lights when you leave a room: save £6/ 23kg

2. Turn the thermostat down by 1° C: save £50/ 330kg

3. Turn off all standbys: save £32/ 130kg

4. Wash laundry at 30° C: save £10/ 45kg

5. Walk if the journey is less than a mile: save £10/ 22kg

6. Boil only the amount of water needed: save £6/ 29kg

7. Draught proof around doors and windows: save £25/ 150kg

8. Turn off taps when brushing teeth: save £11/ 2.9kg (and 4,230 litres of water!)

These simple steps easily become a habit.

The figures above are nine years old and electricity prices have sky-rocketed since then.

Cost of living rose approx 20 per cent between 2008 and 2015 so savings will be greater.

A staggering 25 per cent of the town committed to do these actions: it’s amazing what can be achieved when we all work together.

So if these simple things are part of your lives now, you are ready to move on to something a little more demanding.

Changing how we behave is difficult for all of us, but well worth it to get what we want.

We all want a prosperous town that is pleasant to live in.

To achieve that, more of us could shop locally where possible – this will help our independent stores and markets survive.

And to achieve a pleasant town, using the car less often and not idling at traffic lights or outside schools would make a big difference.

Your children, Wallingford and the wider world will thank you. As we said last week, every little helps.
