We do not believe that residents living near the St Mary’s School site redevelopment have anything to fear from the increase in the number of affordable homes for rent to 50 per cent of the total.
The state of the economy will have a bigger impact on local house values than the future residents of this estate ever will.
Social housing is much in demand, including from people born and brought up in the Wantage area who cannot afford their own homes because of the inflated prices.
In spite of the effects of the recent recession, many still cannot even begin to aspire to home ownership because of the cost.
Thames Valley Housing is responding to market pressure in increasing the allocation of socially rented housing.
That market pressure comes from the fact that many cannot afford a home or cannot get the mortgage funds because of stricter rules on credit.
This situation is unlikely to change in the near future. It is far better that these homes should be built and for people to be living in them than for them not to be built
