SIR, After the highway authority has devoted nine man-days to lowering the southern kerb and resurfacing the adjacent pavement for the warden-controlled crossing for Charlton Primary School, will it be too much to hope that those parents who, currently, use Aldworth Avenue and cross at the closest point to the old school entrance, will use the safer crossing point.

I am aware that to do so will involve something like 20-30 yards extra but surely it will be far safer than darting through moving vehicles and parked cars on and close to a blind bend.

Paying a very dedicated person to supervise the crossing morning and afternoon and dropping the kerb to make it easier for mothers with prams, scooters or cycles makes this far safer for the pedestrians and also for the motorists in Charlton Village Road , who, after being “freed” by the warden do not expect to see parents and children, even children on their own who have been taught better, dashing out from parked cars to save what? — 30 seconds at the risk of causing an accident or even a fatality.

We have been lucky so far — I hope New Year resolutions and guidance will rule out the need to be lucky replaced by common sense and prudence.
