Sir, With reference to your front page article (Wantage and Grove Herald, October 22) about the ‘wall saga’ in Wantage, I noticed the danger of the partly-broken wall in Wantage and wrote to the town council two-and-a-half years ago. The verbal reply I got was that they were ‘keeping their eye on it’.
I had pointed out that excessive rain causing sodden sub-soil, followed by strong winds, such as we have been experiencing, were just the conditions to cause trees to be uprooted.
Add to this the constant vibration of traffic on this busy road and that the high trees had their roots at the back of the ‘retaining’ wall seemed a worry.
It seems doubtful that if, just repairing the wall, would remove the danger of trees falling across the road. Remember the year when some of the seven oaks at Sevenoaks came down?
