Sir, As a resident of Abingdon, I am becoming increasingly concerned by the widely publicised enthusiasms of local and national politicians and various other groups (particularly affected Oxford residents) who are worried by the threat of floods along the Botley and Abingdon roads in Oxford.
The proposed flood relief scheme may channel flood waters around the western side of Oxford if it is approved and funded. However, and this matter has received very little recognition by these parties and the press, any flood waters sent downstream of Oxford will arrive at locations (such as Abingdon) much more quickly and in greater volume.
The flood waters that could once occupy the floodplain around Oxford may instead cause greater problems elsewhere.
As a resident living on the floodplain downstream of Oxford, I am unable to conceive of a situation where residents in both locations can be satisfied.
The decision makers need to address the concerns of those of us who do not live in the affected parts of Oxford. By this, I mean those such as farmers whose living depends on the current flood management regime as well as the downstream residents who are in the line of fire.
Dr Bob Eeles
