In agreement Sir, I would like to agree with the recent articles regarding Sainsbury’s ridiculously over-the-top policy regarding the purchase of alcohol.
I am 23 years old and was very recently refused service to buy two bottles of wine and a small pack of beer despite the fact that I had id because my friend who was visiting me for the day did not have her purse and, therefore, id on her.
I wholeheartedly agree with the need to prevent underage drinking. But, surely this policy has gone too far. I was buying almost £90 of food along with the alcohol and my friend was simply accompanying me. Yes, underage drinking has become out of control. However, having worked in a bar, I also understand the need for judgement.
This policy does not necessarily prevent, it simply means an underage person cannot be present when the alcohol is purchased.
People of my age are being unfairly victimised and inconvenienced.
On a day when I was extremely busy hosting a dinner party for my university friends, I had to ask my 19-year-old brother to purchase the alcohol for me.
My mother was outraged by the way I had been treated as I have always been responsible and it is safe to say neither I nor my family will be rushing back to Sainsbury’s.
