Sir, There are lies, dammed lies and then there are statistics (Page 11, The Herald, October 21).
Richard Webb is being selective with his statistics I suggest, but then he is required to adhere to the Government ‘line’ in order to justify the millions spent on cameras.
A recent National Audit office report said that areas with the largest number of speed cameras were also where the most accidents took place. That means those areas in the top five for speed cameras ie London, Thames Valley, West Midlands, Lancashire and Greater Manchester all come in the bottom five areas for those killed, seriously injured and slightly injured in road accidents. Some work still to do methinks!
Meanwhile, Newbury bypass has wire rope central barriers which are lethal to a motorcyclist in the event of an accident still in position, when a European report has stated that this type of barrier should be removed as it is dangerous to two-wheeled road users.
