Come on down to Wantage marketplace, dating back to the eleventh century, located in the centre of our historic town, showcasing a fabulous array of visiting market stalls every Wednesday and Saturday, from 8am to 3pm. Local Artisan markets were also introduced in 2020 to succour those living in the OX12 region of Oxfordshire that were producing art, craft, food and drink from their own homes. The market is a focal point for the community who visit the shops in the surrounding area.
Rain or shine, the market has so much to offer, and since the Covid pandemic that struck in 2020, we all know how important it is to support small businesses, as they took a major hit. Walking around the town's markets is a great way to show affection and support for market vendors, who are a vital part of the community's hub. It is also a way to actively discover new and unique items that cannot be bought elsewhere, as well as actually having the opportunity to meet and talk to the stall owner about themselves, their story and what they are selling. Strolling through a market encourages people to stop and spend; it can feel rewarding to treat yourself or another to a gift or a beautiful handmade item, while at the same time knowing you are aiding support to an idividual owner.
Andrea Yates, the Wantage Town Centre Manager, is extremely enthusiastic about her job, especially the markets. In a recent interview, Andrea stated "I am really pleased that Wantage Markets have become more popular over the last few years, particularly considering we have experienced a difficult time nationally. We work hard to bring new traders to the markets, so our community has a wide variety of produce to choose from". She finds a great sense of pride walking around the town's markets.
In a world where you can shop anywhere... shop local.
