OXFORD United’s marathon penalty shoot-out with Chelsea has already gone into the record books.

But for defender Aaron Martin it is one he is keen to erase from his memory as quickly as possible.

The Checkatrade Trophy shoot-out, which only mattered for a bonus point, turned out to be the the longest in the history of English football, with 34 spot-kicks at Stamford Bridge.

Wes Thomas, who had already missed, turned out to be the unlucky one, with his attempt saved by Bradley Collins as Chelsea won 13-12.

The previous record stood at 32 penalties, which was set in two different games – Scunthorpe United’s FA Cup tie with Worcester City in 2014 and Derby County’s EFL Cup clash against Carlisle United earlier this season, which both finished 14-13.

U’s centre-back Martin had a chance to earn the bonus point for the U’s with the score at 7-7, but saw his effort saved.

Captain John Lundstram and Thomas also failed to win it for United.

And Martin is keen to forget what happened in front of a sparse Stamford Bridge crowd of 5,200 – 624 of which were Oxford fans.

The 27-year-old said: “I think we should have won the game in normal time, but the penalties was an experience.

“I have never been in a penalty shoot-out like that.

“I won’t talk about my penalty and I think there are few others that don’t want to talk about their’s either.”
