WANTAGE trainer Henry Candy’s belief that the fire still burned bright within Limato proved justified as his stable star bounced back to winning ways at Newmarket.

After being well beaten in the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes, Queen Anne Stakes and July Cup, the six-year-old gelding had his sights lowered for the Listed Price Bailey Chartered Accountants Hopeful Stakes.

And the 4-1 shot showed his old sparkle on his first run outside of Group company for four years to power home a length clear of Top Score in the six-furlong contest under Martin Harley.

Candy commented: “It’s the first time he has been right this season. It’s great to see him back.”

Now the dual Group 1 winner could step back up to the highest level with the 32Red Sprint Cup Stakes at Haydock on September 8 a potential target.

Limato’s triumph completed an 11-1 across-the-card double for Candy after Skill Set got off the mark with a clear-cut victory in a mile-and-a-quarter fillies’ novice stakes at Chelmsford City with Georgia Cox on board.

The Kingston Warren handler also struck with Royal Ascot runner-up Ortiz, who landed a seven-furlong fillies’ handicap at Kempton in the hands of Andrea Atzeni.

West Ilsley trainer Mick Channon was smiling in the rain at Goodwood on Sunday after reeling off a 308-1 treble courtesy of Two Blondes (100-30), Can Can Sixty Two (11-2) and Fannie By Gaslight (10-1).

Franny Norton made all the running to score on maiden winner Two Blondes and Fannie By Gaslight, who romped home by eight lengths in a fillies’ handicap, while Charlie Bishop repeated the tactics aboard Can Can Sixty Two to take the selling stakes by 11 lengths.

Channon had also been on the mark at Windsor earlier in the week when Hats Off To Larry repeated last month’s course and distance win in a mile and a quarter handicap, with Scott McCullagh on board.

Optimum Time recorded his third course win at Windsor for Blewbury trainer Eve Johnson Houghton when taking a mile handicap under Martin Dwyer.

Johnson Houghton also sent out Lively Lydia to follow up her Windsor win earlier this month with victory in a seven-furlong novice auction stakes at Kempton.

Baron Bolt, from Paul Cole’s Whatcombe yard, finished with a flourish under Rossa Ryan to claim a six-furlong handicap at Goodwood where East Ilsley trainer Hughie Morrison also enjoyed success with Bella Ragazza in a mile fillies’ handicap, with David Probert on board.
