ROWING: Abingdon School coach Charles Cousins was crowned amateur champion at the Wingfield Sculls on the London Tideway.
The Griffin BC rower, who was a part of the Great Britain men’s quad which reached the London 2012 Olympic final, led almost from the start and avoided capsizing when his blade hit some driftwood.
Cousins went on to triumph by almost 20 seconds from Oxford Brookes’ Jamie Copus.
FENCING: Graham Paul won silver in the over 70 men’s foil at the Veterans’ World Championship in Livorno, Italy.
Seeded No 1 after the poules, the 71-year-old, from Upton, looked to be in control of a slow scoring final against Eiichi Ide, but his opponent, from Japan, triumphed 6-5.
He had beaten Japan’s Daizo Kawaguchi 10-8 in the quarter-finals, before overcoming Jan Patterson, of the United States, 10-4 in the last four.
The Oxfordshire competitor also won foil gold with the Great Britain team, beating Australia, Italy and the United States.
BENCHPRESS: Martin Green landed a silver medal at the European Championships in Luxembourg.
The Iron Works Gym, Didcot, member competed in the 102kg bodyweight class and lifted 252.2kg despite struggling with a shoulder injury.
It marked a successful transition from the 105kg class, in which Green won gold in last year.
