To mark Oxford United’s 125th season, we are looking back at what made the news this week in three of the club's promotion-winning campaigns
1964
OXFORD United could hold their heads high about the manner of their exit from the FA Cup.
They lost 1-0 at home to third tier Mansfield Town after attacking for most of the game, but there was more urgency in their football than there had been for many weeks.
It included a superb display from young Steve Hyde, who was outstanding in the first half and useful in the second.
The goal that won the match came as a bolt from the blue from Hall’s speculative low shot.
One thing proved by the game was United were capable of football to match anything the average Third Division club can offer.
1984
KEVIN Brock’s luck was out as Oxford United drew 0-0 at Oldham Athletic.
In the first half the England Under 21 midfielder netted from a typical set piece, only to realise seconds later the free-kick was indirect and rightly ruled out for entering the net without touching another player.
In the second period an identical effort hit the stanchion, ricocheted on to the goalkeeper and struck a post.
Despite those chances, the point which kept them top of the Second Division.
1995
OXFORD United were banking on Matt Elliott and Phil Gilchrist after giving the central defenders new
three-year contracts.
Elliott, 27, had been a tower of strength since signing from Scunthorpe for £170,000.
He had developed a sound understanding with the pacy Gilchrist, 22, who quickly established himself since joining for £60,000 from Hartlepool.
Boss Denis Smith said: “They look a very good partnership, as good as anything outside the Premiership.
“I think if we can go up a league they would do a very good job.”
