JOEY Beauchamp knows what it takes to avoid relegation – and he believes Oxford United’s current crop have more than enough to stay up.

The former winger was one of three club greats invited to the training ground earlier this week to work with the squad.

Beauchamp showed glimpses of why he was such a fans’ favourite during his time at United and he even scored in a small-sided game.

The 48-year-old was part of the U’s team that stayed up on the last day of the 1991/92 Division 2 season, netting in a 2-1 win at Tranmere Rovers.

Beauchamp, who made more than 400 appearances during two spells with the club, drew comparisons with that season and United’s current predicament – although supporters will be hoping their Sky Bet League One status is secured before the final game against current leaders Luton Town.

Beauchamp said: “I was involved in a relegation battle like they are and the game at Tranmere I ended up scoring the winning goal.

“It brings back the memories of that season and hopefully they get out of it.

“They’re too good a team to go down.

“Seeing the table at the end of the game on Saturday, another win and they would move up quite a few places – there’s just so many teams one point above them.

“Hopefully it will all click into place and a couple of wins will get them out of it.”

Beauchamp felt the key to escaping the drop 27 years ago was cool heads and togetherness.

He said: “I’m sure a lot of people didn’t think we’d beat Tranmere, but it just showed the team spirit we had.

“We pulled together and made sure we won that game.

“You obviously need a little bit of luck in football, but also good players and team spirit – hopefully that will be the case for them this season.”
