JOSH Ruffels has been voted Oxford United’s player of the season by supporters.

The 25-year-old from Kidlington topped the vote and received the Andrew Knapton Trophy on the pitch before today’s final home game of the campaign.

It comes at the end of a season where Ruffels has made the left back role his own, making 50 appearances in all competitions before this weekend.

He passed 200 games for the club in December and has also scored four goals, most memorably a 94th-minute winner against Wycombe Wanderers last month.

Cameron Brannagan won the award voted for by his fellow players.

Herald Series:

The midfielder is another to hit a half century of appearances in what is his first season of playing week-in, week-out.

He has also scored six goals, including a terrific strike in January’s home win against Portsmouth.

The other prize presented before kick-off was the Jack Casley Award for the club’s best young player.

Tweaked this year to acknowledge talents who have come through United’s academy, it was won by Slavi Spasov.

The forward scored a penalty on his first-team debut aged 16, in the Checkatrade Trophy against Fulham Under 21s.

Herald Series:

He was the club’s youngest scorer since their Headington United days and has also been part of a successful under 18s side this season.
