AHEAD of each of United's Sky Bet League One games this season, we are looking back at memorable matches against their next opponents.

January 5, 1980: Blackpool 1, Oxford United 2

OXFORD United had left Bloomfield Road pointless after each of their previous seven visits, but a Les Taylor double put paid to that unwanted record.

The midfielder struck in each half as the U’s started a new decade on the front foot by claiming their first away win for two months.

Just 105 seconds had elapsed when Taylor collected John Doyle’s throw-in level with the 18-yard line on the right.

He was allowed to turn and aim a shot to the angle of the far post and bar, with the ball sailing over Blackpool keeper Iain Hesford into the net.

It was the earliest Bill Asprey’s men had taken the lead all season, but they were soon pegged back.

Gary Watson brought down Seasiders forward Dave Bamber in the penalty area after 17 minutes, Stan McEwan scoring from the spot.

United were not deterred and continued to search for a way to regain their lead, with Billy Jeffrey’s spectacular 30-yard effort flying a foot wide of the target.

The U’s finally got their reward in the 53rd minute, when Taylor headed home Colin Duncan’s excellent cross.

Blackpool pushed for another equaliser for more than half an hour, but United’s stubborn defence frustrated their hosts to claim a deserved win.

It remained the club’s only victory at Blackpool until their 1-0 win in February this year.
